What are Circadian Rhythms and Why Do They Matter for My Child's Sleep?

Why does it Matter?

As a sleep consultant, I have so much valuable information to share with parents and my main goal is to get these families better sleep! However, it is important to not overlook the science behind sleep. This is why understanding our circadian rhythms is soooo important, it helps use understand why we are doing the things we are doing for your children’s sleep, and even our own sleep.

What are Circadian Rhythms?

Circadian Rhythms are 24 hour cycles that are part of our internal clock and it carries out essential functions in the body. One of these rhythms is the sleep-to-wake cycle. When the circadian rhythm is correctly lined up, it can promote healthy sleep. However, when it is thrown off it can result in sleep problems.

How Do They Work?

Circadian rhythm helps the body’s processes increase at various points throughout the day. Light is a very powerful influence. It is linked to days and nights.

How Does It Affect Sleep:

Circadian Rhythm really affects the sleep-to-wake cycle and it is driven by light. Natural light helps you stay awake and darkness indicates sleep. When circadian rhythm is thrown off your body’s systems will be thrown off most likely. This can cause falling asleep to be a struggle, staying asleep throughout the night a problem, and it can cause early wakings? Sound familiar for your child’s sleep?!

How To Keep Our Children’s (and our) Circadian Rhythm On Track?

Keeping your circadian rhythm in check includes being exposed to natural sunlight. It is helpful to follow a schedule, including awake windows. We want to limit light and screen time before bed, at least one hour before bed. It’s a good idea to dim the lights 30-60 minutes prior to bed if possible.

So now you know how big of a part circadian rhythm plays in your and your child’s sleep. Let’s do our best to keep our circadian rhythm on track to promote naturally healthy sleep!
